The Second IFEES Summit will
-
promote action and interaction among
leaders of engineering education societies, industry,
and governments worldwide
-
promote collaboration through sharing
best practices and results of initiatives and discussing
how they can be adopted/adapted
-
promote member participation by inviting
action proposals from member organizations to be discussed
in roundtable discussions. The primary subject will be
inviting member collaboration and consideration for future
IFEES-sponsored initiatives
The Summit's main sessions are organized according to IFEES'
areas of focus:
- Engineering Education Infrastructure - Includes
initiatives for development of engineering faculty, curriculum
and academic leadership, and promotion of globally recognized
quality and accreditation
- Research & Development and Entrepreneurship:
Includes initiatives for integrating research experiences
across the engineering education pipeline, promoting entrepreneurship
and technology transfer, and excellence through creation
and enhancement of Ph.D. programs
- Student Attraction and Success: Includes
initiatives focused on increasing the visibility of engineering
as a profession, improving retention, participation of women
and underrepresented populations, promoting student mobility
worldwide, and promoting collaborative and joint degree
programs
- Lifelong Learning: Includes initiatives
focused on promoting continuing education opportunities
The main sessions will include:
- World Bank Workshop: A five hour
interactive workshop developed by the World Bank Institute
in collaboration with IFEES and industry, designed to provide
the basis for effective collaboration to develop knowledge-based
economies. The facilitators of the event will be IFEES President-elect
Lueny Morell and World Bank Institute representatives
- Interactive Panels: Three 75 to
90 minute panels organized by strategic focus area. Beginning
with a five minute introduction by the moderator followed
by 2-3 short eight to ten minute presentations of multi-national
initiatives followed by further comments, questions and
answers to the remaining panelists and interaction with
the audience. The goal is to disseminate best practices
and invite dialogue and further adoption and collaboration
Examples of initiatives that will be featured in the panels:
- Indo-US Collaboration on Engineering Education (IUCEE):
This IFEES-sponsored initiative brings together the
World Bank, National Academy of Engineering, leaders of
engineering education, industry and government representatives
from India and the US to address four strategic areas through
a Indo-US Summer Faculty Leadership Institute of 23 Train-the-Trainer
seminars to be offered in May-July, 2008 at the Infosys
Campus in Mysore, India
- Global Engineering Deans Council: With
the backdrop of globalization and rapid technological advancements,
there is a heightened expectation for engineering colleges
to help respective economies grow and sustain societies.
This IFEES-sponsored initiative has created a new international
forum to discuss the varied challenges and opportunities
faced by engineering colleges around the world and to network
and forge collaborations among engineering education institutions.
The Executive Committee has been formed and will meet in
May in Paris. Expectations are to have the first full meeting
of the GEDC in early 2009
- Prototype Engineering Accreditation System for
the Caribbean and Panama: This International Development
Bank-funded initiative brings together several Caribbean
nations and Panama to explore creating a prototype accreditation
system for engineering programs in these nations
- Student Platform for Engineering Education
Development (SPEED): IFEES and ASEE have been
working with global engineering student leaders to create
this new student organization
The Second IFEES Summit will also include:
- Round Tables: Parallel roundtable discussions
organized by strategic focus area will feature initiatives
proposed by IFEES members inviting collaboration or requesting
IFEES-sponsorship, and discussion of an action plan for
the strategic area. These round tables are led by IFEES
Vice Presidents, who will present reports to the IFEES Assembly
on October 20.
- The IFEES Assembly of Members: Reports
from the President and the Vice Presidents will be presented
and the elections for Executive Committee will be held.
- Keynote Dinner Speaker: Prof. Konrad Osterwalder,
Rector of the University of the United Nations in Tokyo
and former Rector of Swiss Federal Institute of Technology
(ETH) in Zurich has accepted the invitation to speak at
the October 19 dinner. Prof. Osterwalder is currently President
